Numbers 21:2

But Israel binding himself by vow to the Lord, *said: If thou wilt deliver this people into my hand, I will utterly destroy their cities.

Numbers 33:40.

Cities. Hebrew, "I will subject their cities to anathema, or utter destruction." This vow they probably made at the place called Horma, or "Anathema," which was anciently called Saphaad, Judges 1:17. They fully executed their threat under Josue, who defeated the king of Hered, (Josue 12:14,) though they destroyed, at present, whatever they could. Arad was afterwards rebuilt by Hobab.
